Brazil’s gen-t project aims to sequence the DNA of 200,000 Brazilians in order to guide more precise prevention and treatment strategies
In March 2024, Veja Saúde highlighted gen-t’s mission to map Brazilian genetics in order to improve disease prevention and treatment. “We need to have data on Latin American genetics in order to enter the era of precision medicine and offer people more assertive diagnoses and health treatments”, said Lygia Pereira, geneticist and founder of gen-t.
Currently, only 1% of the DNA sequenced in the world is of Hispanic or Latin origin, while 2% is African, 10% Asian and 80% European – an imbalance that impacts the promotion of precision medicine for all.
